During his Schmoedown career, Andres “Ace” Cabrera competed in the teams, Innergeekdom, and Star Wars divisions. Drafted by Winston Marshall in the 2020 Schmoedown draft, he was a founding member of SWAG. Here are his reflections on the show that we all love, in his own words.
Looking back on the Schmoedown, what is the most memorable moment that you were personally involved in?
I would have to say winning the Star Wars tournament. That last match was intense cause I knew Andrew would be an enormous challenge. Once I was down, I felt like I was on the ropes so coming back to hit my five-pointer and actually winning was a shock.
What is the most memorable moment that you were not involved in?
I feel like being live for Marisol’s win against Griffin Newman was special. I became a fan of hers just by keeping up with the single’s division so seeing her come up and eventual dominance of the division was a blast. Seeing it live with a crowd was even better!
Which of your matches would you say is the best you played?
My match against Laura is always brought up because I actually went perfect, but also my match against Harper. I still feel like I could’ve won if I had gone with my gut on a few questions. That could’ve changed the course of where the SW division went.
Which match that didn’t involve you would you say is the best you ever saw?
I thought Adam Collins winning his first championship was special. I was legit impressed by his run and seeing him go up against the best was a lot of fun.
How would you describe the Schmoedown’s impact on you?
I mean, it’s weird. I was an intern then PA then AP for the Schmoes Know show so my connection to the Schmoedown starts in Season 2. Once it took off and became its own thing, I didn’t participate. So seeing it being filmed while I was there was fun. Actually being a part of it was great; mainly meeting the SW competitors. They really do represent the best of the Star Wars community. The connection we all developed due to the Schmoedown really made all the studying worth it.
What will you miss most about the Schmoedown?
Seeing more of the Star Wars players. I thought every single one of them was great. I feel like studying with SWAG (Winston, Chandru, Paul, and any others) was also memorable. I didn’t always feel like studying but being motivated by them and even just catching up with them.
