Movie Review: The Last Exorcism (2010)

Posted on February 17, 2021January 2, 2025

The Last Exorcism is a found footage supernatural horror film that was released on August 27, 2010. It was directed by Daniel Stamm.

Summary: A troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.

Notable Cast Members:
Patrick Fabian – Cotton Marcus
Ashley Bell – Nell Margaret Sweetzer
Caleb Landry Jones – Caleb Sweetzer

Review: This movie is a movie I had watched a while back, but I decided to come back to it and I’m glad I did. It is one of my favorite movies done in this style. One reason is because it makes sense to want to record an exorcism. I also like the fact that they are really filming it to disprove exorcisms so that people would possibly stop doing them.

The lead actor in this film, playing the pastor from Baton Rouge, Patrick Fabian, does a pretty good job here of acting but acting in a way that he doesn’t look like a movie star. You can really believe he is a pastor from a smaller town. Let’s face it, people. Baton Rouge, although bigger for Louisiana, is small compared to other places. It also did a good job of showing up some crazy stuff but at the same time not going overboard so that it didn’t become cheesy. Pretty much all of this until the end seems believable. Is the father a bad guy who had his daughter captive or is this a real demonic possession is something that keeps you wondering as the film moves along.

Is this movie perfect? No, it isn’t, but it can give you a good time while passing the time or if you find yourself stuck in the rut we all get in while we are moving along and not being able to choose a movie. Yeah, you know those moments when you find yourself wanting to watch a movie but spend an hour just moving through the list. Next time this happens, give this movie a shot. I rated it as 3.5 on Letterboxd and gave it a like. Maybe you will do the same or maybe you will think it sucks, but either way, it beats flipping through movies for an hour trying to make up your mind.

If you do watch it, comment on this post and tell me what you thought. You can find me and what I’ve watched on Letterboxd. Until next time, have a good one and I’ll see you soon.
