Over the course of the five years that LGRN has existed, there were definitely times when I thought we’d never hit 1000 subscribers on the flagship channel, LGRN – Entertainment. We weren’t the only Schmoedown-related channel out there, but we were one of the bigger ones, and when we transitioned that channel following the Schmoedown’s end to talking about entertainment news, we’d lost our niche.
Niches are very important on YouTube. The more focused your channel is, the easier it is to grow. The subject of the flagship channel, entertainment news, is pretty broad. Same with LGRN – Sports. Therefore, growth on the channels sometimes moves at a snail’s pace. It is frustrating, to be perfectly honest.
Why is 1000 subscribers such a magic number for YouTube channels? It’s because you need that many subscribers for monetization of your channel. But there are other requirements for monetization, such as watch hours, that we don’t have yet. So even though we’ve hit the magic number (more on that in a moment), the channel isn’t monetized.
We use a service called TubeBuddy to help us tag our videos, apply end screens and cards, and they produce some analytics as well. This was the state of the channel on January 1, 2024.
We grew a lot in 2024, as evidenced by TubeBuddy’s end-of-year assessment, which they released to us on December 6th.
Gaining 142 subscribers in one year was a tremendous achievement, considering we’d only gained 63 subscribers in 2023. I was going to be happy ending the year at 987, only 13 away from from the magic number.
But then the number kept going up.
We were at 990 on December 14th, and that’s when I decided to make it my mission to try and get us there by the end of the year. Ten subscribers in seventeen days didn’t seem like it would be that hard to get.
So I took the link to the channel and started posting it everywhere. X/Twitter, Facebook, Bluesky, in other Discords that I’m part of – literally everywhere that I had access to that I could think of.
And then on December 16, at approximately 4:35pm PT/7:39pm ET, I got a text message from friend of the channel Drew Grant telling me to go look at our subscriber count.
After years of watching other channels hit that number, and then the slow growth of the post-Schmoedown era, to finally get there meant I had an emotional release of very happy tears. I quickly posted about it in the business section of our Discord for the rest of the crew to see, and everyone started celebrating, posting GIFs, and just enjoying the moment.
We’d done it. It took us nearly five years to get there, but we’d done it.
We had decided a few months before that when we hit that number, we’d do a live stream to celebrate. After we hit the number, we decided to combine that celebration with our fifth anniversary of the channel stream and have one big party.
So save the date. Saturday, April 5th. Start time is still TBD. We have a lot of planning to do for the stream still, so we don’t have any more details to offer at this time, but we’re going to have a big party that night. And after five years of hard work to get to this point, I feel like it’s well deserved.
