Some big moves happened in free agency, especially on the Dungeon’s side of things with their big gets. Then we had Finstock doing Finstock things when he acquired JTE on the signing special. But none of these seem to have the controversy that the move the Den made when they grabbed Marisol and immediately traded her to Korruption for Shannon’s first two draft picks. You could call it the deal heard around the world, or at least in the Schmoedown world. With people taking sides, loving it or hating it, the debate began. Where do you side? I’ll tell you where I do.
This trade isn’t as simple as it looks. It wasn’t just something that happened in a split second like some might think. As soon as the season was over and Kristian had explained the way all of this was to work, every manager in the league started talking to people. Well, everyone but Shannon because she locked who she wanted as her award for winning it all. At this point, everyone started doing what they could to grab the big names like Murrell and Bateman. Kate was one of these managers, especially with Tom leaving the Schmoedown, that had to make moves. Unfortunately, it looks like Bateman and Murrell may have had their plan for revenge somewhat planned out from the beginning. So Kate’s big moves were gone besides maybe getting Ethan or a returning McWeeny, which was also a big surprise to many of us.
From the beginning of all this, Kate had mentioned she wanted to start from the ground up which falls in line with her character change during Spectacular. So with time running out, she looked into her own faction for some solid ground and she found Paul Preston and Ben Goddard. We all know the potential Preston has and Ben was the talk for rookie of the year for a lot of the season so all wasn’t lost. As she went after her third signing, dominoes started falling and now were landing in her direction.
So where can you start brand new, well, like any team in this situation, you look at the draft. The draft this year unlike the first year has many more options. And if you like what you see there, you are going to want to get more of that pie than you naturally could get otherwise. How do you get that? Well, it’s by trading for more picks.
And no one wanted someone as bad as Shannon wanted Marisol. Kate saw that and jumped on it and now she has essentially 3 first-round picks. Imagine if an NFL team had that many picks in the first round. And as we did our mock draft, the one thing I realized was talent is there for the picking. She can build a team that fits her and fits her team.
At the end of the year when this is all said and done, I think that this moment will not be one looked at as a mistake, but may show you Kate Mulligan took her situation and turned it into a positive. We may see a faction that comes together with no outside forces involved and shows us that you don’t have to have the big names to win it all. Listen people we all made the mistake last year of saying the Finstock Exchange had it in the bag and the only thing we had in that bag was a team that fell apart piece by piece. Let us all wait until the draft is over before we make assumptions. I feel that the narrative may change before our eyes.
