Movie Review: Five Nights At Freddy’s (2023)

Posted on January 23, 2024January 2, 2025

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a 2023 supernatural horror film based on the video game series of the same name. The film was directed by Emma Tammi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback. The film stars Josh Hutcherson, with supporting performances from Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard.

Synopsis: A troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift won’t be so easy to get through. Pretty soon he will unveil what actually happened at Freddy’s.

Rating: PG-13 (Language, bloody images, strong violent content)

Streaming: Peacock

Budget: $20 million

Box office: $294.6 million

Rotten Tomatoes:

I agree with the audience here. Although the movie wasn’t the greatest thing on Earth and as a horror fan I wished there was more bite to it, I thought they took the movie to a place that was interesting enough to grab you and keep you entertained. The game is you sitting in a chair watching security cameras and they expanded on that with a story of a family falling apart because of a kidnapping of a son and brother.

I do think one thing they could have done is really expand on the family dynamics like when things were good to really get you to feel for the brother and sister even more as they try and figure this out. The daughter of the killer, the cop is an ok addition and I thought the actress did well enough for what she had but certain things don’t make sense like why would she keep this secret, they could have showed that she had no choice because her father was in control some how but they really didn’t show any of that. Which in turn makes her redemption not mean as much. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie overall, you take a game without a huge story and make a feature length film on it and make it entertaining overall is a pretty good accomplishment.

I can see why many fans find this a fun adaptation of the game. And to be honest that should be your goal when making this kind of movie. Could it have been scarier? Yes. Could they have made the family dynamic mean even more? Yes they could have. So that is why I give this movie a 6.5 out of 10, above average and some good moments but kept me entertained more than I thought it would. Blumhouse just seem to always have success it’s amazing how good that studio is overall. I think they succeeded with this one as well.
