As I predicted last year, the Carson Wentz experiment was a failure. Just one year after the Colts traded a first-round pick for Wentz, they have moved on from him. They made this decision after not making the playoffs by losing in embarrassing fashion to the division-rival Jaguars whose fans were dressing as clowns in the stands in the final game of the season. Now they bring in 37-year-old Matt Ryan to try and lead this team, but have we not seen this before with Philip Rivers. I think the decisions this team makes at QB will continue to trouble them this season. Ryan is in a new system and, just like Wentz, he will need time to get acclimated to the offense and will struggle at the beginning of the season when the schedule is easiest for them. With no first-round pick and not adding more weapons through free agency, they will continue to rely on Jonathan Taylor to carry the load. They added a couple of pieces to an already good defense but the lack of offensive firepower with an aging quarterback doesn’t seem like an improvement from last year’s failure.

It was a quick first-round exit from the playoffs for the Titans, losing to the eventual AFC champion Bengals in the divisional round. Head Coach Mike Vrabel has done a really good job in his first 4 seasons with the Titans. He has a 29-19 record with a 60% winning percentage and zero losing seasons. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has had a resurgence in his career after coming to the Titans but still has been looked at as a game manager as the offense is led by running back Derrick Henry. I don’t think he will have to worry about rookie Malik Willis for this season as he is just a raw talent that is probably not ready to start which is why he fell in the draft. They decided to not pay A.J. Brown but did replace him with 1st round pick Treylon Burks, which if he is ready to step in will be the same player. This team’s core is still intact with one of the strongest defenses in the league and one of the best backs in the league. I can’t see why they can’t repeat the same success as they have had the past 4 seasons and have a winning season once again. They were the number one seed in the AFC last season and they have the 8th weakest schedule in the NFL with their opponents having a record of 136-153.

Throw out last season as it was a complete waste of time for the Jaguars. Urban Meyer’s tenure with the Jaguars ended quickly just 13 games in after a video of a girl dancing on him, the story that came out of him kicking a kicker, and starting the season with a terrible 2-11 record. Trevor Lawrence’s rookie season was derailed by all the dysfunction that is the Jaguars organization but looks to be better this season with the hiring of Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pederson. Pederson in his first year as a head coach with the Eagles was able to win 7 games with a rookie Carson Wentz. I believe he can have a big impact on the development of Trevor Lawrence. He will be getting help with Travis Etienne coming back from injury missing his entire rookie season. They spent a lot of money on free agency to help with the lack of talent they faced last season. I feel like Trevor Lawrence can have a Joe Burrow-type leap in his 2nd year. With Doug Pederson bringing in a whole new staff, I believe it will prove dividends in the win column maybe not to the extent the Bengals did but a definite improvement.

Though the Texans have made some improvements to their team at WR and the Secondary, they didn’t improve at the most important position quarterback sticking with 2nd-year quarterback Davis Mills. This might be by design knowing they will not be very good this year and anticipating a much better QB draft class next year than it was this year. Even though the new head coach has a Super Bowl appearance on his resume, he is still mostly a .500 coach throughout his career with a record of 89-87. In his last 2 seasons, he went 8-24 and the last two times he was with a new team, he was 5-11 with the Bears and 2-14 with the Bucs. I see the same this year for the Texans because they know that after all the controversy with Deshaun Watson, they are in rebuilding mode and are very youthful which is good for the future success of the team, just not the immediate future.
