Between the Lines: Miami Vices

Posted on February 9, 2025March 23, 2025

The tumultuous year that has been the 2024-25 NBA season for the Miami Heat revealed another chapter in its saga.  In a season that has seen the team’s relationship with superstar player Jimmy Butler devolve to the point suspensions have been levied against the player, yet again a Miami Heat player dominated the headlines.  In a story initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, it was reported that Terry Rozier was under investigation by the U.S. District Attorney for unusual betting patterns that surrounded a game of his in 2023. At the time, Rozier was a member of the Charlotte Hornets, and the game in question doesn’t come without a dash of irregularity.  In March of 2023, Rozier would play only a handful of minutes in a game before being shut down not only for the rest of the game, but the season as well with a foot injury.  The game was flagged by the U.S. Integrity, a firm that monitors for suspicious betting patterns, working with sportsbooks, and the government.  Props for Rozier were pulled at many sportsbooks across the nation after unusual betting activity on the under bet for Rozier’s props in the game.

The news comes on the heels of the NBA seeing Jontay Porter being sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a betting scandal to manipulate Porter’s player props.   There have been no allegations made towards Rozier, and no charges have been filed.  This probe by the U.S. District Attorney’s office is the same investigation that uncovered Porter’s connections to an illegal sports betting ring.  Almost as soon as reports of the news broke, the NBA issued a statement in which they stated the matter in question had already been investigated by the league’s office, and was aware of the investigation by the U.S. District Attorney’s office.  This does raise a series of questions, of which being, is this simply a lot noise about nothing?  Is the NBA trying to get ahead of any potential fallout from another black eye?

No time was wasted by professional sports leagues when it came to jumping into bed with legal sportsbooks.  In North Carolina, where mobile sports betting is legal, the Hornets have a sponsorship with Bet365, a sportsbook operator, and this is just one of many examples.  While the NFL has faced similar issues with players betting on games, none of it rose to the level of the Porter case.  The NFL, just like the NBA, has sponsorships with legal sportsbooks.  NBA players are permitted to gamble on sports as long as it is not NBA games.  In this latest instance with Terry Rozier, the question has to be asked if there was any impropriety on Rozier’s part, because it is not inconceivable to say Rozier had zero involvement.  The game in question was flagged for “irregular betting patterns,” and what does that actually mean?  How often do these instances occur?  In the digital age, where a great deal of news and analysis is consumed through the content spaces of platforms, we should be highlighting a major difference from Jontay Porter. Terry Rozier is an established NBA veteran, and not a fringe player.

As a well-known player, the volume of betting on Rozier would be perceivably higher, but without knowing what dictates “unusual,” one can only assume.  Another explanation, one that the NBA would rather not want to admit, is that player information isn’t as secure as people want to believe, and that could be a problem of a different sort.  On March 23, 2023, the game in question, Rozier exited the game presumably due to injury, and afterwards was shut down for the remaining eight games of the season.  Rozier’s name was absent from the injury report going into the game, but it wouldn’t be the first time a veteran player on a struggling team saw their season clipped just a bit early.  Let us not forget that the entire sports reporting industry is built off sources and leaked information.  It is that information that drives the numbers up and down at sportsbooks, more so than the action coming in.  Only when the game was “flagged” by U.S. Integrity did sportsbooks see fit to take down all prop bets for Rozier.  As it stands, there are far more questions than answers about this situation that clearly will be an on-going matter.

If this was a matter similar to the Porter case, it’s highly likely the NBA front office would have not made the official statement that it did.  To have an established veteran of the league involved in an illegal betting scandal is a true worst-case scenario for the NBA.  This could prove to be an explosive situation if circumstances change, and could generate a ripple effect throughout the sports betting landscape.  We have yet to see the full extent from the ripples of the Jontay Porter investigation.   Will Terry Rozier be the next domino to fall in this saga, or is this a case of an over-zealous federal prosecutor in a politically charged climate grasping at straws?  We live in an era of reporting where being first outweighs being accurate, and with a laundry list of questions to be answered, the public will be left with speculations instead of facts.
