Movie Review: Ma (2019)

Posted on March 3, 2021January 2, 2025

Ma is a psychological horror film released in the United States on May 31, 2019. It was directed by Tate Taylor.

Summary: A lonely woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. Just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host.

Notable Cast Members:
Octavia Spencer
Juliette Lewis
Luke Evans

Review: A Blumhouse production always, for some reason, gets me excited to watch. And this one was no different. You don’t see it at first, but this turns out to be a true revenger story. The actors and actresses do a really good job, especially the kids. A good mixture of innocent and shenanigans in the bunch. And they do well to never make you really dislike one of them as well, which makes it good at the end when crap hits the fan because you feel for them as they are getting basically tortured by Ma.

And believe me, the crap does hit the fan. Octavia Spencer as Ma is amazing as always. She really sells her stuff. The way she plays the character as someone that is deranged but at points, you think, aw, she could be a cool next door neighbor.

Overall, I gave this movie 3 1/2 stars on my Letterboxd and I hit the like button as well. I would definitely watch this movie again with a friend who hasn’t seen it. No Oscars or anything like that, just another solid Blumhouse production that you find yourself enjoying.

Perfect story? Nope. Perfect acting? Nope. But not everything has to be perfect. Every movie has flaws just like every person does, but it’s still enjoyable. And hey, where else are you going to see a story about when a blowjob goes wrong? LOL.

Thanks, guys, and hope you are enjoying the content that we put before you. Give me a comment if there is a movie you would like me to speak on or a trailer you want me to review.
